It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. Looking at the list of sponsors , the local unicorns and the amazing number of attendees, you get the impression that there is a concrete alternative to Silicon Valley in Utah. Personally I would definitely choose Utah over the Bay Area for a number of reason, ranging from the culture of belief to the beautiful mountains and surroundings, last but not least the cost of living.
Among my favorite talks I can name a few, starting from Stewart Butterfield of the Stack fame — who gave an inspiring speech talking about his experiences and takeaways in the context of entrepreneurial life — to Omar Johnson who shared few examples of amazing marketing strategies at Beats , as much as I enjoyed Ryan Smith of Qualtrics explaining the Utah way to entrepreneurship build to keep.

Having been helping dozens of Open Source projects to grow, either with marketing tactics or sales strategies, my long time biggest passion has been how Open Source ventures can possibly sell their products without upselling their own community. Given FileZilla scope, the Cloud arena was the natural target, and we were looking for a company offering a cloud service that was going to be exclusively available to our users. Eventually we opted for the latter, read below to learn more about.
It seems yesterday to me when I was writing about moving on , four months later I am happy to announce I have just started a new business venture. I have called my new company Business Follows , because users and customers!
If we play right, the business should be as much as possible a nice consequence. He is not dependent on a third party. It gives room for creativity and flexibility. The analyst is also welcomed with an easy to interfaces for each tool geospatial tools.
Commercial GIS software is more suitable for newbies finding their feet in geospatial analysis. For open-source GIS software, it is not so easy. Though they possess quality geospatial tools, it is difficult to for analysts to use optimally at first. Open source GIS software is more suitable for seasoned professionals in the field of geospatial analysis. It is not ideal for newbies or amateurs, or else a poor analysis will be conducted. From network analysis, to land analysis, commercial GIS software carries out these tasks with ease.
It turns an herculean task into a walk in park. For open source software, though it does not add to the complexities of the task, it does not really provide much to make analysis easier. It leaves the analyst in the cold. Each has its own customers. However, what differs is the modus operandi chosen to develop their customer base.
For commercial software, their customer base consists of rich clients and customers with difficulties no other person can solve. As of Nov. While most commercial OSS companies are permissively licensed, GPL and copyleft licenses seem to occupy the majority in value. This isn't surprising. Intuitively, restrictive licenses should allow you to capture more direct value from your creations.
If we consider a breakdown of average valuation by license type, the prominence of permissive licenses seem to diminish considerably:. In comparison, copyleft-licensed software shows a significantly higher average valuation compared to permissively-licensed software.
In fact, even the AGPL , a significantly less popular license, averages a similar valuation to the permissive Apache 2, and even eclipses BSD-licensed companies. The most important task of the company that decides to take the open core approach is to find the right balance between the core and crust. One that will not restrict the value and performance of the open source part, while still providing enough incremental value to its paid users that will justify their investment.
At Webiny, we have made a deep analysis of all the available and potential business models and have also found the open core to be the best way forward for our product.
And we have put a massive focus on making sure we find the perfect balance point between the two parts. Our commitment to our community is that we will always keep access to our Webiny open source framework and apps completely free of charge.
And rather than separating a part of the code and turning it into a proprietary software, we have decided to build a completely separate product that will perfectly complement our Webiny OS by providing additional features that will further improve the Webiny OS usage for larger teams and multi-project circumstances. And most importantly, not taking any value away from our open source users.
This new product has recently been announced on our product roadmap under the name of Webiny Control Panel. You can find more details about it here: Webiny product roadmap. Software has completely changed the world as we know it and is part of almost every aspect of modern life. It is hard to predict what the world will look like in the future and how technology will further develop it, but it is absolutely safe to say that software innovation will be one of the main drivers of that evolution.
The constant and rapid software innovation is unlocking new levels of what is possible every day. And to circle back to what I mentioned at the very beginning - there is no better way to develop new software than by joining the strengths of the global community of developers around an open source project.
